Physician Rehab Referral Relations Portfolio and Toolkit

Physical Relations Toolkit

This tool kit - developed by Steffes and Associates - offers "out of the box" solutions, techniques and strategies for increasing referrals to your practice that can be implemented immediately without significant financial investment.
The Physician Referral-Relations Portfolio And Toolkit is uniquely developed to position you and your staff in a way that is more professional to physicians. It lets doctors know they are working directly with healthcare colleagues - specialists in their own field - instead of product sales reps.

With the majority of rehab providers relying on physicians for more than 95% of their referrals, the key to growing a successful practice is developing many, quality referral relationships. A task made much easier with the straight-forward information and simple strategies provided in the toolkit.

The Toolkit is comprised of two important elements: training for you and your staff, and templated professional communication materials you can customize as part of your referral education and communication portfolio including - professional announcements, specialty program descriptions and many more.

The entire program is the culmination of many years of personal experience and feedback from private practice owners and referral sources. It includes three no-nonsense and motivating 45-minute inservice video training sessions - each created to empower you and your staff, even if naturally reluctant to perform business development, with the necessary skills to approach physicians as professional colleagues.

Simply put, it is physician relationship-building material developed by and for rehab professionals.

A Guide to Facilitating the Development of Professional Behavior

Elements Essential to Developing Professional Behavior
by
Warren W. May, PT, MPH
In Collaboration With
Gwyneth Straker, MS, PT, ABD and Lynn Foord-May, MSPT, M.Ed, CPP, ABD

This manual presents a six-element process for facilitating the development of professional behavior. Each chapter introduces a concept, provides practical guidance and examples of implementation, and summarizes key points. All chapters include a worksheet to stimulate reflection and discussion. The concluding chapter presents the role of faculty and students as the principal agents of implementing the process. Samples of core abilities, self assessment forms, a reflective journal and a retention/dismissal policy are provided as appendices. The format is loose leaf in a three-ring binder to provide for ease of use and inclusion of related materials.

Elements Essential to Developing Professional Behavior
1. Sharing Expectations that are clear, explicit and public.
2. Providing Opportunities to practice and learn expected behaviors.
3. Ongoing Assessment by a teacher or supervisor, by a peer and by oneself.
4. Providing Feedback when coaching, guiding and counseling.
5. Structuring Growth through remediation and enhancement of performance.
6. Imposing Consequences if expected behaviors are not learned and demonstrated consistently at the required level of proficiency.

The process is recursive; always beginning with and returning to clearly stated, explicit, public expectations.

In recognition of the ground breaking work done by the Physical Therapy Program Faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, all profits from this endeavor will be donated to the Program’s Mary McKinney Edmonds Minority Recruitment Fund.
Manual Description

The concluding chapter presents the role of faculty and students as the principal agents of implementing the process. The format is loose leaf in a three-ring binder to provide for ease of use and inclusion of related materials.

Although the description of the facilitation process is focused on faculty and students, by substituting “supervisor” for faculty and “staff” for students, the material and the process can be used effectively in the workplace for staff performance appraisal and professional development.

Clinical Competencies for Physical Therapy Personnel

One of the most difficult responsibilities of the clinical director of any facility is to determine whether your staffers are clinically competent.  As you prepare for a visit from an accrediting agency, can you document the skill level and professional development of your staff?

The Texas Consortium for Physical Therapy Clinical Education in conjunction with The Texas Physical Therapy Education and Research Foundation has developed “CLINICAL COMPETENCIES FOR PHYSICAL THERAPY PERSONNEL: A Guide to Assessment and Professional Development”.

“CLINICAL COMPETENCIES” is patterned after The Blue MACS, a widely used competency tool that has been utilized by PT students throughout the US. since 1977.  “CLINICAL COMPETENCIES” focuses on the skills needed by physical therapy providers (PTs, PTAs, and Aides) to engage in safe and effective clinical practice.  “CLINICAL COMPETENCIES” provides the basis for an assessment of each employee’s strengths and weaknesses, and can be incorporated into Total Quality Management and staff education programs.   This document is a MUST for all facilities preparing for a visit from an accrediting agency!
